Art Studio Lectures

Informal lectures are held in a comfortable Berkeley, California studio and garden easily accessible by public transportation. We often lunch together and have shared friendships and activities with those who enjoy the arts. Join us for a lectures series, including guided tours of art exhibits in the San Francisco Bay Area.

past and current art trends

Combine theory with the visual experience by getting a thorough introduction to past and current art trends before experiencing the artwork. An academically trained art historian, Barbara Rydlander provides a wealth of information through exciting lectures and an extensive slide collection.

Lectures are designed to inspire members to share their enthusiasm about lecture topics, which have ranged from recent archaeological discoveries in China to African-American artists during the Harlem Renaissance, as well as contemporary electronic / multimedia to the history of English gardens.

Take a cross-cultural, visual journey through time to explore how diverse art forms were exchanged and enhanced by their contact with others through an examination of their geographic location on major trading routes and migration paths. Understand how art, architecture, music, dance, and ceremony were impacted by these contacts. Examine the role of multiple, spiritual traditions on diverse art forms and ceremonial expressions. We will explore Tang Dynasty Silk Road contacts in medieval China; ancient classical remains, Byzantine, Islamic, and Norman sites in Sicily; ancient sites in Cyprus and the Turkish coast including Istanbul's heritage; Cuba and its blending of Spanish and African cultures; and finally Santa Fe, New Mexico, with its rich mixture of native peoples, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures.
